The Government of the Republic approved the proposal for establishing the Narva theatre centre. Between 2017 and 2025 the Government will find 250,000 euros for the Narva theatre centre each year when preparing the draft state budget.

On 18 January, the Government of the Republic approved the proposal for establishing the Narva theatre centre. Between 2017 and 2025 the Government will find 250,000 euros for the Narva theatre centre each year when preparing the draft state budget.

According to the Minister of Culture Indrek Saar the theatre centre to be built will help make Narva’s cultural life more diverse and improve the quality of the living environment. “The situation is not acceptable, where in the third largest city in Estonia by size, Narva, today there is no hall for making theatre on a professional and modern level,” Minister of Culture Indrek Saar said. “Narva deserves the addition of a modern theatre centre with such great potential among its cultural facilities, which would also be attractive on the international arena,” Saar added.

The completion of a modern multifunctional theatre centre is planned for the end of 2017. A black-box type theatre hall with about 220 seats together with ancillary and office premises and a café and gallery area are planned into the centre, the activity of which would be operated by the Vaba Lava Foundation and which will be located in the rooms of the former Baltijets factory (Linda 2, Narva). The creation of the Narva Vaba Lava theatre centre is a good example of how new opportunities can be created in the cultural sphere in cooperation with the state, local government, private and third sector.

The Ministry of Culture is looking for opportunities to begin the first activities for building the theatre centre already this year from the Ministry’s  budget. The additional allocation of long-term budget funds into the budget of the Ministry of Culture of 250,000 euros per annum is prescribed in the 2017-2025 budget period for creating the Theatre Centre and launching and supporting its activity.
